Description
The Atlanta History Center (AHC) is owned and operated by the Atlanta Historical Society, Inc. Founded in 1926 by a group of Atlantans interested in preserving the region’s history and promoting it to others, the AHS has grown from a small, volunteer-run organization to a highly professional institution with a unique set of resources and a national reputation for excellence. The History Center has been headquartered in its current location, the former Edward Inman estate in the Buckhead section of Atlanta, since 1966.
This design competition is intended to identify the best architect or architectural team to re-shape the Atlanta History Museum. The parameters include:
- A new exterior for the Atlanta History Museum
The entrance and exterior is the Museum’s first impression. It should be compelling, recognizable, functional, and relevant to the surrounding neighborhood.
- A reconfigured interior space
The interior space should convey a sense of place. The interior should be welcoming and promote exploration and narrative. Flow should be intuitive.
- Improved pre-function events space and retail space.
These areas are critical resources for the museum and should be integrated seamlessly into the overall flow of the museum. The total project area for this challenge is 29,600 square feet. The construction budget for is set at $8 million, including contingencies. Architecture and engineering fees and related expenses are expected to be in the range of $800,000.
