Design of Botanic Garden & Associated Structures

The Gullele Botanic Garden is planned to be realized on a large tract of land, North West of the city of Addis Ababa, straddling the escarpment west of the pass on the Gojam road.

Description
The project program consists of several building ensembles, outdoor facilities and gardens. The project aims to turn the tide of environmental degradation, rehabilitate damaged eco-systems and ensure sustainable use of natural resources, by serving as an example of proper environmental management for the Horn of Africa region. It envisages enabling the study of nature, promotion of sustainable use of biodiversity resources and demonstration of appropriate environmental technologies.
Participating firms are expected to form an international consortium combining knowledge and expertise from Ethiopia with foreign ideas and skills from the Horn of Africa region or elsewhere.

Jury
A jury committee composed of the following members has been appointed:
Mr. Kari Silfverberg, Architect (Finland),
Prof. Adil M. Ahmad, Urban planner (Sudan),
Mr. Zeleke Belay (Representative of AEA)
Ms. Rahel Shawil (Representative of AEA)
Two deputy members and four reserve members are also in the course of appointment.

Judging Process
One-Stage, Anonymous Competition

Prize
First prize: ETB 100,000
Second prize: ETB 60,000
Third prize: ETB 40,000
A further sum of ETB 50,000.00 is allocated to be disbursed at the discretion of the Jury to the three winners or other entries deserving recognition of merit. The First Prize winner will be commissioned by the Promoter to design at least one building and/or a part of the botanical garden for the Gullele Botanic Garden and possibly also its surroundings, on terms to be negotiated with the project office.
