The Modena Municipal Authority, some years ago started a process of participatory reflection on the Porta San Francesco and Porta Saragozza area which led to the birth of a renovation and valorisation project that aims at defining new economic and social development perspectives for this area.

Eligibility Professionals (preferably young ones) with economics, communications, architecture, engineering, graphics, design and arts skills who will set up workgroups (each 2 members minimum)

The Porta San Francesco and Porta Saragozza area is a complex and heterogeneous area, located in the Southern part of Modena’s old town centre (it occupies about a quarter of the whole old city area), is subject to several public and private city transformation measures.

The Ideas Competition fits well in this context to complete it and enrich it with stimuli, ideas and contents with evident effects and real measures focussed on giving an identity and some values to all the Porta San Francesco and Porta Saragozza area.
- AIM 1: Encouraging people to visit the area and the development of economic activities by means of urban marketing and communication measures that will give a new image to the area;
- AIM 2: Rehabilitate and improve the public areas, improving area access, usage and perception, in cooperation with the public and private measures that have already been carried out, will be carried out or are planned to be.

Evaluation Commission composed by Modena Municipal Administration employees and experts of the subjects of the Competition

Judging Process

1st Prize: 10,000 euro
2nd Prize: 6,000 euro
3rd Prize: 3,000 euro
All projects in the final ranking list will become parts of a virtual exhibit to be published on
The best projects will also participate to a public workshop directed by Professor Pierluigi Sacco, Evaluation Commission Chairman and Head of the Arts and Industrial Design Department / Deputy Dean for communications and publishing activities at IUAV (Venice’s Architecture University Institute).
