Description
The City of Vancouver’s VIVA Vancouver program (VIVA) started the tradition of transforming the 800- block of Robson Street into a summertime plaza in 2011. Three years later, in 2014, we formalized the process and created the Robson Redux design-build competition.
After the huge success of Robson Redux 2014, with nearly 80 entries from around the world, we are excited to announce that the second edition of the competition is now open for registration!
The goal of the Robson Redux competition is to temporarily transform the iconic 800-block of Robson Street, in the heart of downtown Vancouver, Canada, into an inviting pedestrian plaza for the summer season. This block of Robson Street serves as an important entryway to major landmarks located in and around the Robson Square complex; the transformation is meant to encourage people to slow down, pause and connect with one another.
Last year’s winning design generated a lot of local and international media buzz and created a fantastic summertime street experience. People passing through the space slowed down, stopped and spent time in the plaza all summer long. We can’t wait to find the winning design for 2015!
Like last year, a jury will select a single winning team to design, build and install a temporary public space installation for summer 2015.
The theme of the competition is connection: people’s connection to one another and to urban space. The theme of connection will be elaborated in the process itself through encouraging cross- disciplinary design teams that include both artists and designers.
