2012 Charter Awards

The awards recognize excellence in architectural, landscape, and urban designs built in harmony with their physical and social contexts.

Description
Every year, the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) facilitates an awards program to recognize the very best in New Urbanist design. Winning projects are recognized for their excellence in fulfilling and advancing the principles of the Charter of the New Urbanism, which defines the essential qualities of walkable, sustainable places from the scale of the region down to the block and building.
CNU’s Charter Awards recognize excellence in architectural, landscape, and urban designs built in harmony with their physical and social contexts. CNU convenes a jury of distinguished designers, architects, planners, and scholars who choose the winners of the awards after the entries are fully vetted, and educates practitioners on the design techniques employed in the award-winning work. Chairing this year's jury will be CNU Board member Doug Kelbaugh, Professor of Architecture and Urban Planning at the Taubman College of the University of Michigan.

Jonathan Barnett (a Professor of Practice in City and Regional Planning)

Prize
Grand Professional Prize: $3,500 cash prize
Grand Academic Prize: $3,500 cash prize

Entry Fee
$250 per project
CNU members: $200 per project
Student and faculty submissions: $50 per project

- Response to Charter Principles (limit to one page or 650 words)
- Lessons Learned (limit to a half a page or 325 words)
- Printed Photographs and Illustrations (5 to 12 pages)
- Up to 9 images
