Description
It is planned to erect a temporary landmark on the site of the historic Aldgate, on the eastern edge of the City of London1. The landmark will stand for the duration of the year 2012, coinciding with the London Olympic and Paralympic Games. The landmark will reinforce the City’s links with the City Fringe and with the regeneration of this area of East London and contribute to the celebration of the Games. Sited on the location of the historic Ald‐Gate, the landmark will be a signal that the City welcomes its neighbours; historically, Aldgate was known as ‘Ale‐Gate’, so called because it was the only gateway in the City walls open to all.

For the purposes of the competition, entrants should work to a maximum budget of approximately £300,000, including construction costs, maintenance, all fees and VAT.
Proposals need not be fully costed, but should be realistic in relation to the budget.
