Urban Design for the New Centre of Riga in Torņakalns, Riga City Council and Public Administrative Complex Competition
Result
On 17 September the Jury of the sketch competition “Urban Design for the New Centre of Riga in Torņakalns, Riga City Council and Public Administrative Complex” made a decision regarding competition results.
The distribution of prizes is the following:
1st prize: Fletcher Priest Architects (Great Britain);
2nd prize: SIA “Uģis Šēnbergs, arhitekts” (Latvia);
3rd prize: SIA “MG Arhitekti” (Latvia);
4th prize: Giencke&Company – Volker Giencke (Austria);
5th prize: SIA “STANDARDSITUATION.Latvija” (Latvia).
The winners of the first three prizes will be invited to the negotiation procedure for conclusion of the agreement on elaboration of construction programme for the New Centre of Riga in Torņakalns.

Overview
The aim – to create preconditions for optimal development of the Competition Site in Torņakalns, obtaining the urban design of the New Centre of Riga of the 21st century and architectural Sketch for the Riga City Council and the public administrative complex.

Description
Considering the economic growth of the country and increasing inflow of investments in national economy, the further development of Riga as of the central and largest Baltic capital is expected. It is also reflected in the Riga Spatial Plan for 2006-2018 that envisages the expansion of the Riga centre on the left riverbank of the Daugava and creation of several service and business centres. The planned construction intensity requires sustainable, modern and efficient infrastructure development solutions.
