Description
The Castle of Ripafratta, one of the most important fortress of Tuscany, is a ruin since the XVI century. The last renovation was designed by the famous renaissance architect Giuliano da Sangallo in 1504, probably in collaboration with Leonardo da Vinci.
Is it possible to bring life back inside this medieval walls?
The answer to this question is in the hands of the architects, the engineers and the students who will participate to this competition.
The submitted projects will be displayed in an exhibition in a historical villa and the winners, in addition of receiving a prize, will be invited to explain their project to the citizens during the “Festival of the Castle”, June 8-9th 2019.
Ripafratta Castle is one of the most important fortifications in the territory of Pisa and it is an iconic element of its landscape. It is part of a bigger cluster of medieval fortresses in the “Monti Pisani” area, which are mainly abandoned, whereas they represent a relevant artistic and territorial value. During the last decades, spotlights were focused on the reuse of Ripafratta Castle, thanks to a considerable citizen action, which pressed for its renovation with many initiatives, both on territorial and national scale. This international competition aims to give visive strength to the fortress and to prove that it is still possible to bring life inside it, after such a long time in which it has been a ruin. Participant will be invited to conceive a design for the reuse of the Castle, which will then be submitted to the citizenry.
