Overview

Scotswood Expo Architectural Competition is a new design contest open to architects with exceptional design skills and fresh thinking in the design of new housing for the UK's first Neighbourhood Expo. This competition aim is to select six design teams to develop innovative housing designs which respond to the challenges of environmental sustainability, adaptability, new ways of living and designing beautiful buildings. The Competition seeks to develop designs for plots to create a family of demonstration houses or prototypes that will be built for the Expo event and sold on thereafter.

Description
Scotswood Expo will be held in the Scotswood area of Newcastle upon Tyne. The Expo will be the first phase of a large new community of almost two thousand households, served by new schools, a new local high street and community hub as well as extensive space for start-up and growing businesses.

The competition site, the 'Expo Link', is a central street of 60 new homes in four terraces that will be the centrepiece of an Expo Festival in the summer of 2011. From the first expression of interest stage, the intention is select a shortlist of 12 to produce concept designs. The best six will then be awarded contracts to develop their designs throughout the terraces in a number of different combinations.

Jury
The jury panel, chaired by a leading architect, will comprise a number of key design professionals as well as public and private sector representatives.
Details of the jury panel will be announced on websites below during the Stage 1 process.
