Description
Columnar jointing area near Jungmun Daepo Coast is an important geological heritage in Jeju island, created from basaltic lava erupted into the sea approximately 250,000 years ago. It is also a vestige of the local culture as residents appropriated this area for agricultural purposes until 30 years ago, which is unusual for Jeju. Currently, however, not only is it difficult to observe the beautiful landscape of the area but also the potential of the landscape is yet to be fully realized. The park parallel to the columnar jointing is far from fulfilling its role as an entrance into the geological heritage site; furthermore, developments in the surrounding areas are threatening the contextual landscape narrative that connects oreum, the cone-shaped accumulation of volcanic material, to the shore. We have reached a point where it is difficult to expect any fundamental improvement to take place by simple measures such as constructing new or repairing existing facilities.
Meanwhile, the columnar jointing area has been managed by the control of the Cultural Heritage Administration since 2005 after being designated as the Natural Monument No.443. This may act as a protective measure to prevent damage to the columnar jointing, yet also act as an obstacle for further improvements. Therefore, this is an appropriate moment to gather wisdom and to maximize the landscape potential of the columnar jointing area, while protecting its value as geological, cultural and natural heritage site.
The international competition is expected to serve as a venue for proposing fundamental solutions to improve the columnar jointing area by preserving its value as a natural heritage site and ultimately enhancing the visitors’ site experience. We hope to discover design proposals that encapsulate creativity, feasibility and considerations for the ways visitors view the site, the spatial organization of the upper level park, and the connectivity with the surrounding area.
