Description
Material prosperity resulting from the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century led to a strong belief in rationality and the world started to become more systematic. ?esign?became a word that more easily conveys to the public the aura discovered in craft in the pre-industrial era, establishing itself as an aesthetic behavior that complements functional elements. Therefore, the aesthetics of designed objects existed in a relatively passive and contemplative position, being separated from functional and cultural elements. Space or interior design was aesthetic value merely added to functional interpretation of life, failing to be actively integrated into culture or functions.
Every society formulates philosophy within the context of the values of the respective era and organizes itself toward following that philosophy. And inside the philosophy there exist the ideals that the society always dreams of. Now, the time has come when design should move a step forward from mere contemplation of passive and superficial aesthetic senses and put into action the social values and philosophy of the times, becoming an active player in transforming the society.
The aesthetics that design aspires to should go beyond the phase of sensational perceptions accepted by people. It should be expanded to something that actively change the society people belong to by providing motivation for thinking, leading to action. By fulfilling such a role, design dreams of achieving social ideals and offers sophisticated philosophy to the artificial world as a living entity, thereby motivating humans experiencing design to enjoy an enriched life.
