Today Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is delighted to announce the winner of Southend Pier Head design contest - renowned Swedish based landscape architecture firm White arkitekter.

The company - which has also won awards for other maritime architecture projects throughout the world - clinched the top place with a design called ‘Sculpted by Wind and Wave.’
This winning scheme was chosen from among 73 international and local entries for the competition run by the Landscape Institute on behalf of the Council. The competition was run with the support of RIBA Competitions.

The four other shortlisted design teams were :
- Wilkinson Eyre Architects with Schonherr Landscape and Conisbee
- Hugh Broughton Architects with Land Use Consultants, SKM and Spiers and Major Associates
- LandLab with Ushida Findlay Architects, Atkins Bennett and United Creatives.

Southend Pier is an iconic structure that over the last 150 years has helped define Southend. In 2005, however, a fire destroyed the Pier Head. Southend Council is holding an international landscape architecture competition to choose a design for the Pier Head that will reinvigorate and bring activity to it and the town, making it a source of pride to residents and attraction to tourists. The new Pier Head must be developed in a manner that contributes to the cultural offering within the town while also respecting its heritage. The budget for the works on the Pier Head as outlined above is £5million. This figure includes all fees to be payable in relation to the works.
