Description
Waterfront development in Hull UK City of Culture
Hull is a city built around water, which brings opportunities and challenges. Whilst waterside living is seen as an attraction, the risk of flooding is something that needs addressing through good design.
Humber Quays West and Hull Arena is one of the city's most prestigious redevelopment opportunities, and design ideas are being sought for this major residential-led redevelopment to celebrate the waterfront city centre location. Water resilient development is a key priority, therefore design ideas should embrace the principles of ‘Living with Water’ and produce innovative designs to deal with flood risk.
Design aspirations:
- Residential-led scheme at Humber Quay West (1.7 ha) and Hull Arena (1.5 ha).
- Waterfront is affected by Flood Risk and subject to maintenance for the Environment Agency who require access to the defence easement.
- Opportunity to explore a variety of building heights to include an element of townhouses within the mix.
- Practical, sensitive and integrated approach to on-site car parking that does not compromise overall design quality. The parking strategy SPD for the city centre asks for 20% of the standard provision set out in the Local Plan.
- Take pedestrian priority measures in linking the two parts of the site.
- Water resilient development is a key priority across the whole site. Designs should embrace the principles of Living With Water and propose innovative designs to deal with flood risk.
- No self-contained apartments at ground floor level due to flood risks.
- Opportunity for the Public Right of Way No. 28, Trans-Pennine trail, to be designed into the scheme.
- Protecting residential amenity from port related uses to the south.
- Designs should meet and exceed Hull's ambitions for quality new homes for its residents. Homes must meet space standards, be tenure blind and provide a good mix including some family housing.
