A 50m high illuminated tower has won the international design competition for the proposed Mersey Observatory on Crosby beach. The design by Duggan Morris Architects emerged as the frontrunner in thousands of votes and comments from local people, and was the unanimous choice of the judging panel.

Duggan Morris Architects, based in Shoreditch, is headed up by Mary Duggan and Joe Morris. Mary and Joe studied at The Bartlett School of Architecture.
The practices’ current portfolio ranges from private residential commissions to large-scale commercial, developer –led and affordable housing projects.

Description
Mersey Basin Campaign invites submissions for an international open design competition for the design of an innovative, architecturally striking and unique signature structure at the Crosby Radar Tower site, located at the mouth of the Mersey Estuary near Liverpool.

The design will inspire and encourage people to visit the site and understand the dynamics of man and nature on the coastal edge. It will have a positive impact on the natural environment of Crosby Coastal Park and will include a café, education and interpretation space, staff accommodation, toilets, lobby and entrance spaces.

Entries
Stage One:
Competitors should submit their anonymous design on no more than two lightweight, A1 foam boards. This should be accompanied by a digital copy (PDF format) of the board(s), together with an A3 colour hard copy reduction(s).
