Description
As this poto:type has become an automatic architectural response to the needs of Vancouver’s urban core, it is now being exported to other urban centers across North America and Asia. While it is true that it has been very successful at increasing density and meeting city planning goals and developers’ business plans, it has drawn little from our city’s architectural talent and arguably has achieved little in terms of architectural innovation. Furthermore, it is now being replicated to such an extent that it threatens the diversity of Vancouver’s neighbourhoods, proliferating a mono-type (and mono-culture) in place of social and architectural diversity.
The intent of this Competition is to be a catalyst for critical public discourse aimed at improving Vancouver’s downtown core by generating and displaying alternative building typologies. It is a call to action, to reengage in the shaping of the city, and an opportunity for the dissemination of architectural ideas to the public.
