How can public space evolve to better meet the needs of our changing social and natural systems? What kinds of public spaces will be needed in the future? How can activation and use of public spaces be encouraged and accommodated in new and inventive ways? Can we generate ideas today that will inform a new generation of cultural centers and public places?
The Seattle Center Century 21 Master Plan outlines a conceptual framework for the campus’ future. Its overarching planning and design principles call for a design that puts pedestrians first, and emphasizes flexibility, vibrancy, legibility, and artistic expression.
Key goals for the Core Site as envisioned in the Master Plan include:
- Open up the site and connect to the surrounding neighborhoods.
- Provide flexible open space for a variety of uses (field, entertainment venue, festivals, etc.).
- Relocate the Memorial Wall to a prominent place on the campus.
- Incorporate storm water management strategies.
- Accommodate structured parking and multimodal connections below grade, with above grade pedestrian connections.
