Description
The Architecture at Zero competition was conceived as a response to the zero net energy targets set out by the California Public Utility Commission (CPUC) in the 2008 report, California’s Long Term Energy Efficiency Strategic Plan. In this report, the CPUC set out “Four Big Bold Energy Efficiency Strategies” (BBEES) for California that include the goals that all new residential construction in California be ZNE by 2020, and all new commercial construction be ZNE by 2030.
Zero net energy goals come with a number of new design challenges, especially in urban infill situations where project sites will not always be optimal for passive energy-saving strategies or integration of renewable generation. In addition, many challenges will need to be addressed when adapting ZNE building to common urban forms, from high-rise commercial towers to multi-family residences.
The program is to design a mixed-use zero net energy building or set of buildings on an urban industrial infill site. The building(s) are to include 240 residential units, one 1200 square foot retail space, and a new - 4000 square foot public library branch. The building(s) must be grid-tied.
